8 Pathogens

Sallie awoke after sleeping fitfully. Her forehead was pebbled with drips of hot sweat. Her mouth was very dry and her pouty lips were parched. She spoke out as she blinked her puffy eyes, “Do I work today?”

Standing up she was dizzy and had to sit down quickly. She then felt her stomach lurch and rushed for the bathroom. However, the room was not as she remembered and she stubbed her toe on a wall where the door to the water closet should have been.

“Ouch! That really hurts!” she cried out and sat back down on the bed, then flopped over. “Oh, my head. No more chuflay for me. I will stick with good old reliable Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier.”

“I am sorry,” Kimberly stated. “Are you referring to chuflay as in the alcoholic drink? My records show it consisted of about one part singani to three parts soda—where the soda was ginger ale, or one of any number of the myriad of lemon-lime-flavored, non-caffeinated, carbonated, nonalcoholic beverages, commonly called soft drinks—and then fruit juice and fruit slices were added. Is that what you mean? The other name is not in my database. To what do you refer?”

“Huh? What?” Sallie rolled over and then tried to sit up. “Who said that? Where is the toilet?”

A light came on across the room. Sallie stumbled toward it, trying to hold in bodily fluids from both ends. The floor was spinning and the ceiling was moving in the other direction, or maybe it just felt that way. She barely made it to the toilet and kneeling down she vomited heavily into the bowl. She gagged as another wave washed over her and erupted out. “Yuck!” She had to then turn around as explosive diarrhea wracked her body and her bowels let loose. “Oh, I am so sick!”

“I am Kimberly. We met yesterday. I am summoning medical assistance.”

“What?” Sallie asked as she slipped off the toilet and fell to the floor. “Am I still dreaming? Oh, what a weird dream. Some goofball spaceship, time travelers, wars and rumors of wars.”

The seizure hit her as she tried to hold herself upright against the wall. It began in her scalp but rapidly engaged her facial muscles, “I’m… what’s… what’s… wrong?”

But her mouth and tongue were trembling as the seizure swept through her body beginning at her head. Quaking and shaking, the painful tremors started as very fast and very slight contractions of her muscles. She tried to move, but her arms were failing her, yet, with a supreme effort, she pushed away from the hard toilet and crawled into the center of the room.

“Medical help is on the way,” Kimberly announced. “I am urgently calling for help.”

In agonizing pain, stretching out, Sallie fought the seizures, but was unable to do anything more than she had. By moving away from the confines of the toilet area, she did save herself broken bones as the tremors shifted in tone and intensity. They had begun as rapid and slight contractions, but then slowed in rate, but increased in scale.
